When a whole airport stops, the cause may be external — bad weather, a volcano, air traffic control — and then compensation may not be due. Not always: a strike by the airline's own staff, for example, does not rule it out. It is checked flight by flight.

Methodology and sources

The data come from the FlyArea archive: flights departing from and arriving at the airports we follow, archived and normalised. The month is that of departure, in local time; the scope is that of the departure airports. Disruptions are cancelled flights and flights arriving at least 180 minutes late, the compensation threshold in Regulation (EC) 261/2004. Cargo flights are excluded.

A day at an airport is an “event” day when, out of at least 20 departing and arriving flights, at least 50% were cancelled, diverted or arrived more than 120 minutes late: the same threshold we use to assess a claim. The rankings are sorted excluding flights that departed from or arrived at that airport on those days.

A day is in the archive if it has at least half the flights of a typical day of the month; a month is published if it has at least two thirds of its days. Missing days are listed next to the month.

What we do not know: why a flight was late. Whether a passenger is owed compensation depends on the cause, and is checked flight by flight. The rankings include only airports with at least 200 flights, airlines with at least 300 and routes with at least 50.
